Pit bull dogs were originally bred in the 19th-century United Kingdom by crossing Old English Bulldogs with terriers to create a combination of strength, agility, and tenacity for blood sports. Their primary, original purpose was to bait bulls and bears for entertainment, and later to fight other dogs in pits.
Factors
- Bull and Bear Baiting
Early ancestors were used to immobilize large animals, such as bulls, by biting their head or nose. - Dog Fighting and Ratting
After baiting was outlawed in 1835, these dogs were used for, and often bred for, fighting in "pits" or rat-baiting, which were easier to hide from authorities. - Breeding Traits
Breeders aimed to combine the ferocity and strength of the bulldog with the speed and agility of the terrier. - "Nanny Dog" Myth
While often cited as family protectors, this was largely a later reputation; their, initial, and most significant, breeding was focused on combat-related tasks.
